#5 – Run the Jewels

AS CHAOTIC WORLD EVENTS AND AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE MADE 2017 SEEM FRAUGHT WITH POTENTIAL DISASTER, EL-P AND KILLER MIKE SOUNDTRACKED OUR ANXIETIES WITH THEIR THIRD ALBUM. FOLLOWING UP THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT AND RUN THE JEWELS 2, JAMIE AND MIKE CONTINUED THE INTENSITY AND IRREVERENCE THAT MADE THOSE RECORDS GREAT, WHILE ALSO DOUBLING DOWN ON THEIR QUESTIONING OF UNCHECKED AUTHORITY.

IT’S NO EXAGGERATION TO CALL R-T-J 3 “DYSTOPIAN”, BUT IT’S ALSO A LOT OF FUN. SO WHILE “TALK TO ME” MIGHT CALL OUT THE PRESIDENT, IN THEIR WORDS, “A DEVIL” WITH A “BAD TOUPEE AND A SPRAY TAN,” THEY ALSO SIMPLY REVEL IN THE JOY OF SOME GOOD BOASTFUL WORDPLAY IN “CALL TICKETRON.” IT’S ESSENTIALLY ONE BANGER AFTER ANOTHER, WITH GUEST APPEARANCES BY THE LIKES OF KAMASI WASHINGTON, DANNY BROWN AND MEMBERS OF TV ON THE RADIO.

THOUGH 2017 FEATURED NO SHORTAGE OF GREAT HIP-HOP RECORDS, SOME OF WHICH ARE ON UNHERD’S LIST, FEW GO QUITE AS HARD AS RUN THE JEWELS 3. IT’S THE SOUND OF TWO RAP VETERANS AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME, HAVING FUN WITH WHAT THEY DO WHILE SHOWING YOUNGER GENERATIONS HOW IT’S DONE.
