#6 – Algiers

IN 2017, ALL MUSIC WAS MORE OR LESS POLITICAL. IT’S HARD NOT TO BE: THE WORLD HASN’T BEEN FACED WITH THIS MUCH CHAOS AND VILLAINY SINCE AT LEAST THE ‘70S, AND IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO GET A LITTLE WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER. BUT ALGIERS, A MULTI-NATIONAL POST-PUNK GROUP FORMED IN ATLANTA, CAPTURED THAT FRUSTRATION BETTER THAN ANY OTHER MUSIC THIS YEAR WITH THEIR SECOND ALBUM, THE UNDERSIDE OF POWER.

BUILDING ON THE UNIQUE FUSION OF PUNK, INDUSTRIAL, GOSPEL AND R&B FROM THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, ALGIERS HAS TAKEN ON ON GREATER EXPERIMENTS WHILE HONING IN ON THEIR MESSAGE OF INJUSTICE AND OPPRESSION. THE ALBUM’S TITLE TRACK IS A CATCHY STANDOUT BUILT ON NORTHERN SOUL RHYTHMS AND THE OMINOUS BUZZ OF PROTO-INDUSTRIAL DUO SUICIDE. MEANWHILE, “WALK LIKE A PANTHER” JUXTAPOSES BLACK PANTHER QUOTES AGAINST TRAP BEATS AND DARKLY INTENSE SYNTHESIZERS. THEIR MESSAGE IS FURIOUSLY DEFIANT, BUT IT’S DELIVERED IN SOME OF THE YEAR’S MOST CAPTIVATING STYLISTIC EXPERIMENTS.

IT’S NOT EASY TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHERE ALGIERS FITS IN, GENRE-WISE, AND THAT’S PART OF WHAT MAKES THEM INTERESTING. THEIR MUSIC MIGHT NOT BE EASY TO MARKET, BUT YOU CAN FEEL IT DEEP IN YOUR SOUL.
