#8 – Slowdive

IT’S BEEN 22 YEARS SINCE SLOWDIVE GAVE US NEW MUSIC. THE WAIT HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT EXCRUCIATING FOR FANS OF SHOEGAZE, WHO HAVE SEEN A LOT OF TRY HARDS IN THE GENRE OVER THOSE DECADES BUT NOT MANY WITH THE EXCEPTIONAL SONGWRITING SKILLS OF THE BRITISH BAND.

LUCKILY THE WAIT WAS MET WITH A SELF TITLED ALBUM THAT PRESSES RESET ON THE BAND WHO ENDURED A BAD BREAK UP WITH EACH OTHER AND THEIR FORMER LABEL. AT ONE POINT IT GOT SO ROUGH THAT GUITARIST NEIL HALSTEAD DECIDED TO ABANDON THE HOUSE WHERE HE CREATED MUCH OF THEIR 7TH ALBUM, LEAVING BEHIND CLOTHES STILL DRYING ON THE HANG LINE. THOSE SHIRTS WERE NEVER SEEN AGAIN.

BUT NOW THEY’RE BACK WITH THEIR STRONGEST ALBUM SINCE THEIR DEBUT. IT TAKES A STRIPPED DOWN APPROACH, ALLOWING FOR GUITARS AND VOCALS TO DRIFT OVER SYNTHS WITHOUT MUCH INTERRUPTION.

IN THE PAST SLOWDIVE HAVE GOTTEN TOO ESOTERIC WITH THEIR MUSIC, MAKING 10 MINUTE OPIATE LIKE SONGS. BUT HERE THEY’VE CREATED AMBIENT POP THAT IS RELAXING AND LOVELY.

GIVE IT A SPIN WHEN LOOKING LISTLESSLY OUT OF A WINDOW AND CONTEMPLATING BUYING ANOTHER BLACK JACKET.
