#9 – Converge

MAKING CONSISTENTLY INTERESTING METAL AND HARDCORE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS IS A TALL ORDER FOR ANY BAND. BUT MAKING CONSISTENTLY INTERESTING METAL AND HARDCORE WHILE ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD, EVOLVING AND EXPANDING INTO NEW HORIZONS IS EXACTLY WHAT CONVERGE HAS BEEN DOING SINCE FORMING IN THE MID-’90S.

THE BAND’S 9TH ALBUM, THE DUSK IN US, RETAINS THE INTENSITY OF EARLY ALBUMS SUCH AS JANE DOE OR YOU FAIL ME. BUT AFTER HAVING MATURED, STARTED FAMILIES AND BECOME ELDER STATESMEN OF METAL, CONVERGE SHOWCASE SOME OF THEIR MOST SOPHISTICATED SONGS TO DATE. CONVERGE BALANCES COMPLEX SONG STRUCTURES WITH A VISCERAL HARDCORE SENSIBILITY ON “I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT PAIN.” AND ON “A SINGLE TEAR,” THE BAND OFFERS UP ONE OF THEIR CATCHIEST, YET MOST INTENSELY EMOTIONAL SONGS TO DATE. YET IN BETWEEN, THE GROUP TAKES ON SOME PSYCHEDELIC DETOURS, WHICH CAN BE AS FUN AS THEY ARE STRANGE AND UNEXPECTED.

THE DUSK IN US IS HEAVY, CERTAINLY, AND THERE’S NO QUESTION IT’LL GET A PIT GOING. BUT IT ALSO HAS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF DEPTH, AND AFTER 20 YEARS, EVEN MORE SURPRISES FROM ONE OF METAL’S BEST BANDS.
