The Smashing Pumpkins reunion is just getting started, but the drama is already in full force.
Shortly after the announcement of the band’s reunion tour and album, bassist D’arcy Wretzky revealed she would not be participating, telling BlastEcho, “I only just found out yesterday that the band has decided to go with a different bass player.”
In a follow-up interview with BlastEcho, Wretzky elaborated on her conversations with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, saying that Corgan told her that his original offer for her to be a part of the reunion “wasn’t a real offer.” She believes she was the only member to have her contract rescinded.
This prompted the band to release a statement through a spokesperson, saying “For despite reports, Ms. Wretzky has repeatedly been invited out to play with the group, participate in demo sessions, or at the very least, meet face-to-face, and in each and every instance she always deferred,” The A.V. Club reports.
Wretzky then released screenshots of her texts with Corgan to Alternative Nation, in which they discuss Wretzky’s shoulder issues– she claims she will be healed in 4 to 6 weeks and she “want(s) to be involved in everything.” Corgan says he wants her to be included, albeit in a limited fashion akin to Stephen Adler on Guns N’ Roses’ recent tour. “If you play 2 songs a night or 7 it’s only gonna be great,” he texted her. “As long as vibe is right and people are smiling.”
A countdown clock is currently up on the band’s website, and is set to reach zero at 9 p.m. on Feb. 14, but no new music has been confirmed yet.
